About Writing is a collection of thoughts, essays, and advice that will improve your creative writing skills. Furthermore, it should inspire new writers to write, and entertain people who enjoy reading about the art form.
My name is Samuel Burrows, and here’s a brief overview of my relationship with writing —
- 2008: Accepted I couldn’t sing or play the guitar well enough and transformed my songs into poems. I won a poetry competition.
- 2012: Graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Creative Writing.
- 2015: Roman Books published my debut novel, The Little Movements.
- 2015 – 2017: Taught Creative Writing and English Literature.
- 2017 – 2021: Wrote full-time in the creative industry, winning dozens of awards for my work.
Due to my background, I can appreciate the art of writing from many angles: reader, songwriter, poet, student, creative, novelist, teacher, and industry professional.
And now?
I am currently rewriting and editing (what’s the difference?) my follow-up novel. This has inspired me to launch About Writing, because there are many writers in the same situation.
Due to the global pandemic, perhaps more people are taking up writing, or returning to writing. I believe in the internal therapeutic effects of writing as much as I believe in outward expression of the art. An unpublished writer is no less a writer than a published one. And every writer wants to write to the best of his or her capabilities, right?
Keep at it!
The most important thing is that you keep at it. More than anything, two things will keep you writing. The first is a network of support, and the other is knowing how to improve your creative writing skills. I hope About Writing can be both for you.
This is an inclusive place. It will develop beginners and advanced writers alike. It will work for writers who create for themselves, and equally well for ambitious writers looking to make a living out of it. If you want to write well, this website will work for you.
This is the mission statement: to inspire, improve, and entertain. The material here will be accessible to all, and useful to all too. I aim to create an engaged audience of writers who learn something and feel more empowered with every post.
